Herman The German Friendship Cake: Day 7

If you’re new to my Herman journey, before you read on, see Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5 and Day 6.

Here is Herman on Day 7:

Herman The German Friendship Cake - Day 7 00He isn’t all that far from the top of the bowl!

Instructions Day 7: Stir well

Herman The German Friendship Cake - Day 7 01He is quite foamy again

Herman is getting bigger each day however i think you can really notice it today as you can see how far he is from the top of the bowl (not far at all!). He’s also retained his “foaminess”.

Herman The German Friendship Cake - Day 7 02He is getting thicker again too

Also there is something i want to mention today. As Herman is a sourdough, and he is fermenting, he releases a smell (especially when you stir him). I have been reading and watching other people’s journeys with Herman and this is one of the first things they mention. However in a negative way. They all comment on how smelly and/or gross he is (poor Herman!). I, on the other hand, think he smells amazing! Every day when i stir him, i inhale his “smell” deeply. I love it! It’s hard to describe the smell, however it’s kind of sweet and yeasty (like a doughnut made out of yeast) and slightly custardy. When you stir him, he also smells a lot like beer. What is wrong with either of those smells is beyond me, maybe those who find it off putting aren’t very familiar with sourdough.

Anyway there’s only three more days to go before it’s time to bake Herman, so stay with me and I’ll see you all tomorrow!

    • Hehe. You make me grin. I call him Hermy all the time. I’m actually becoming quite attached to Hermy though and I’m not sure i want to say goodbye… 😦

And thank you, i don’t understand not liking the smell of sourdough/yeast!
